Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. A published rate is not a quote and not our offer, and nothing here is legal advice.

Sometimes, but not on the named flagships whose calendars we can read. Vela and Prana by Atzaro publish Raja Ampat for these months, and the Phinisi 50 listing places that yacht in eastern waters, so a Komodo charter then depends on which boat stays. One operator guide says the park has no published closed season, yet sailing approvals can stop for weather.

That makes two separate questions out of what looks like one. Is the park open to boats in these months, and is the boat you want anywhere near it? Answering the first does not answer the second.

Where are the flagships in these months?

Mostly a long way from Labuan Bajo, going by the calendars below. Navelia describes the general pattern: May to October for Komodo, November to April for Raja Ampat, and most yachts shifting between them. Individual boats publish their own versions, and they do not match each other exactly.

Where are the flagships in these months?
Boat and sourcePublished location, December to MarchPublished Komodo months
Vela (operator rate calendar)Raja Ampat (November to December, January to April)May to September
Prana by Atzaro (operator)Raja Ampat (December, January to April)June to October
Phinisi 50 (agent listing)Raja Ampat, Banda Sea and Maluku (September to March)April to August

Three boats give three different Komodo seasons, and none of them is wrong: each describes one vessel's year. Their common thread is that none of the three publishes Komodo for December to March.

This has a direct effect on price comparisons. The Vela row in the price table on this page is its Komodo rate for May to September, so it is not a figure for these months. Vela also adds a nightly supplement to its Raja Ampat rate over the New Year weeks, 20 December 2026 to 5 January 2027, and the amount is on its rate page. If you have your heart set on that boat at New Year, your question is about Raja Ampat, its rate and its supplement. It also changes your flights: Sorong and Ambon join Labuan Bajo on Vela's list of usual departure ports, and the Phinisi 50 listing says departing from elsewhere can bring relocation fees.

Which boats may stay in Komodo?

We have not found anyone who publishes a list for the luxury end, so we cannot give you one. What we can do is read the sources closely. Navelia says "most" yachts move, which leaves room for some that do not. Smaller boats may stay, but that is our inference from the word "most", and it is no substitute for hearing from a seller about a named boat.

Tourist boats certainly work out of Labuan Bajo in the early part of the year. Kompas, citing KSOP, put tourist-boat sailing clearances at 20,562 for January to June 2026, or about 113 departures a day on average. That count covers all kinds of tourist boat across six months. It is not split by month or by class, so it cannot tell you how many luxury boats sailed in February.

The practical test is simple. Ask the seller where the boat will physically be on each night of your window, which trip it finishes the day before, and from which port it would start. A seller who has the boat in Komodo should be able to answer those easily. If the answer is vague, or depends on another booking, treat that as a reason to keep looking until you see it in writing.

How often does weather stop sailing?

We have no count of stoppages per year, and any figure you see quoted should come with a source. We can only set out specific events, and they show that the two seasons are less tidy than the brochures imply.

6 to 10 August 2026Restrictions on sailing to Komodo and Padar, lifted on 10 August with waves of 1.30 to 1.50 metres per BMKGKompas

The first two rows concern the same month and read differently. The notice has dates of a few days, with an opening for extension, and the operator guide speaks of roughly a month in all. Later extensions are reported elsewhere, so the two may be compatible, but do not plan on the shorter figure.

The same Komodo Resort guide says the park has no published closed season, and this is worth keeping separate from the stoppages. A park with no closed season and a port that can close at short notice are both true at once, since clearance sits with the harbourmaster. The KSOP head told Detik that clearance has two tests, the state of the vessel and the state of the weather. The August row is a useful corrective too: a dry-month closure can happen, so a stop is not confined to the wet season. For scale, the BMKG wave categories rate 1.25 to 2.5 metres as moderate, and the waves reported at the August reopening fall in that band.

For the sequence of events during a stop, see what happens when weather changes during a cruise.

What should you plan differently?

Most of the planning changes come down to giving yourself options, and to deciding early what you would accept instead. A sensible order runs like this:

  1. Choose the priority. If the boat matters most, go where it goes, which on the calendars above means Raja Ampat or further east. If Komodo matters most, you are choosing among whichever boats are there.
  2. Confirm position by date. Ask for it in writing, and treat it as a term of the deal.
  3. Read the stop clause. Before paying anything, read how deposit and cancellation terms treat a harbourmaster stop, because stops have happened in these months, as in January 2026.
  4. Add land days. Allow spare nights in Labuan Bajo on both sides of the charter. A flight the morning after a planned return leaves you nothing if the boat is held.
  5. Keep the route loose. Ask what the captain would do with a sheltered plan, and which stops would drop out first. Treat any list of islands as a hope.
  6. Ask about price, boat by boat. Do not accept or assume a market-wide figure for how much these months differ in cost. Ask for the rate on your dates, plus any date-based supplement.
  7. Compare the season before you commit. The best time to charter page sets out what the drier months offer, and it may change your mind. Komodo Resort's seasonal guide calls November to March the wet season, and Barefoot Yachts favours April to October for Komodo.

Someone with fixed Christmas leave has less room than most, because the dates are not movable and the boat calendars are against them. If that is you, decide early between two honest options: Komodo on a boat that can prove it will be there, or the flagship you wanted in the waters where it publishes.

Which published prices did we check?

Operator rate pages, agent listings and park fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. A "from" rate is a starting figure, not a quote and not our offer. Tax, season and dates change the total, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

What other questions come up about the wet months?

Is Komodo National Park closed from December to March?

No published closed season exists, according to one operator guide. Sailing approvals can still be suspended, as happened in January 2026, so an open park does not mean your boat can leave on a given day.

Does Vela sail Komodo in December?

No, going by its rate calendar. Vela places the boat in Raja Ampat in November and December and again from January to April, with Komodo from May to September.

Are charters lower priced in these months?

Not on any evidence we have found. The one date-based item is a Vela high-season supplement over the New Year period on its Raja Ampat rate.

How do I confirm the season for one boat?

Ask the seller for the boat's position on each night of your window, and for the port it would leave from. Then check that answer against the operator's published calendar, if it has one.

What happens if clearance closes after I have paid?

Your contract decides that. Published terms range from an exception for an official harbour master instruction to rescheduling with no refund, so read that clause before you send any money.
