Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. A published rate is not a quote and not our offer, and nothing here is legal advice.

Choose a luxury phinisi provider on evidence you can check. A sound provider names the exact boat, states capacity and crew count in writing, shows its safety papers, lists inclusions line by line, and says who answers if sailing is stopped. A class label or a polished page proves none of this. Apply the same tests to every offer, ours included.

What should a provider tell you without being asked?

Six things, before any talk of money. We do not rank boats on this site. The table below is a set of tests, and it works on a flagship and a modest boat alike.

What should a provider tell you without being asked?
TestAsk forA usable answerA reason to pause
BoatName of the vessel, with photos of that vesselOne name, tied to your dates"A similar boat" or a class label alone
CapacityGuest number and cabin count in writingA single number that matches the cabin planTwo numbers, or a number that moves with the price
CrewTotal crew on your dates, by roleA count you can write into the offer"Fully crewed" and nothing more
SafetyLatest safety certificate and its dateA dated document you can read"Everything is approved" with no paper
InclusionsA line-by-line listEach item marked in or out"All-inclusive" with no list
Stopped sailingWho decides, who pays, what happens nextA named role and a written term"We will sort it out on the day"

Why start with the boat's name? A Komodo operator guide says the Labuan Bajo fleet runs to several hundred boats in five broad classes. We have found no official count, but even a rough figure of that size means a word like "luxury" cannot identify a vessel. The same guide puts standard wooden phinisi at often 18 to 25 metres with two to five cabins, deluxe at usually 22 to 30 metres with four to eight en-suite cabins, and luxury phinisi and superyachts at 30 to 60 metres or more. Those bands are that guide's own, and our page on vessel classes shows how other sites sort the same boats differently.

Then match the boat to the people on it. The guide's view is that group size, rather than class, usually decides whether a charter is good value per person. That makes the party list your first document, because it sets how many cabins you need before any boat is compared. A family with small children and a couple on a dive trip will ask different questions of the same vessel, as our page on families and couples shows, and the provider's answers should change with them.

How do you verify capacity and crew?

Compare two sources, then get the number in writing. One agent page for Maj Oceanic gives 47 metres and six cabins, and then both 12 and 14 guests on the same page. That is an ordinary kind of slip, and it is the reason a web page cannot settle your booking. For Sanctuary, by contrast, the operator's page and the Navelia agent listing agree on 48 metres, nine cabins and 18 guests. Agreement between two sites is a good sign, though both remain published claims.

The capacity that counts legally is the one on the vessel's papers. Public pages do not show it, so ask for it, and ask how it relates to the number on the rate sheet.

Crew needs the same care. A single total tells you little until you know who is in it and whether it applies to your dates. Our page on published crew-to-guest numbers works through one listing's figures. We have not seen licences or certificates for the crew of any named boat, so ask to see them yourself if they matter to you.

Which safety papers can you ask to see?

Ask for the ship safety certificate and its date first. Detik reports that the Labuan Bajo harbourmaster's sailing clearance rests on two indicators, seaworthiness and weather, and that seaworthiness is evidenced by that certificate, issued after inspection and testing. For tourist boats in Labuan Bajo the same report says checks run every three months, so a certificate's date tells you something on its own.

The clearance itself needs reading with care. The captain's Master Sailing Declaration, uploaded to the Inaportnet system, is a main requirement for it. The head of the harbour office told Detik that the clearance is an administrative requirement and does not oblige a physical check on board, although the harbourmaster may inspect a vessel known or reported to be unseaworthy. So a boat holding clearance for the day has passed an administrative step. That alone does not show that someone walked its decks that morning.

Some operators publish more. Lamima states that it is certified by RINA with annual surveys, and describes itself as the only luxury phinisi in Southeast Asia built to full international class certification. "Only" is the operator's own word, and we report the statement without having seen the certificate. It is still a useful model: a named class society and a survey interval are things you can ask any provider about.

On the day, the Komodo operator guide advises counting life jackets, checking the VHF radio and GPS, expecting a safety briefing, and being wary of extra decks added to an older hull. Our pages on documents to ask for before you pay and safety equipment take this further. Treat a line about insurance on a web page as a prompt to ask for the wording.

Should you book through an agent or an operator?

Neither route is right every time, so test the deal in front of you. One boat can have more than one seller. Sanctuary shows how that can look: the agent listing and the operator's page each publish a "from" rate, both appear in the price table on this page, and in this instance the operator's starting figure is the lower one. One pair of numbers makes no rule, and a "from" rate does not tell you the dates, the tax, or what sits inside it.

An agent can set several boats side by side for you. An operator knows its own boat and answers for it directly. Whichever you use, ask the same three questions:

  • Whose name is on the contract, and which company receives your money?
  • Does this person have the authority to confirm the boat and the dates, or only to pass on a request?
  • Who do you call once the boat has left the harbour?

Also ask where you board. Kompas reports that boats to the park, phinisi, open deck and speedboat types alike, use Marina Labuan Bajo port, and the offer should say where and when you are expected.

Lamima's rate appears in the price table on this page with its period and its tax basis. Whether or not that boat suits you, a rate stated with those two facts is easier to test than one that arrives as a single figure. More rows are on the published prices page, and our luxury phinisi Labuan Bajo guide compares tax, minimum stay and deposit across three boats.

Who answers when sailing is stopped?

Ask this before you pay, because published terms point in different directions. Komodo Trips offers a new date and no refund when force majeure, bad weather and government rules included, cancels a trip. Maika Komodo Tour holds on to a 30% deposit unless the Indonesian Harbour Master officially tells it to cancel for unsafe conditions. Vela warns that its itineraries may change at short notice.

Your offer should name who makes the call, what you get if a day is lost, and how you will hear about it. Our pages on what happens when the weather turns and deposit and cancellation terms compare more wording.

What do travellers complain about on boats sold as luxury?

Cleanliness, maintenance, air conditioning and overcrowding, according to Visit Labuan Bajo Komodo, which cites recent traveller discussions on Reddit and says not all "luxury" boats meet international standards. That is a seller summarising a forum, with no counts behind it, so read it as a list of things to check and not as a measure of how often they go wrong. Its advice is to read recent reviews, ask for real cabin photos, confirm crew size and verify safety standards. Turn each complaint into a dated request: photos of your cabin taken this season, who services the air conditioning, and the head count on your departure against the capacity on the papers.

How do you test our own offer?

The same way, and with the same suspicion. You should know our position: a request through this desk can lead to a contract with our companies, so we have an interest in the outcome and this guide is not neutral. The site itself is not a party to the contract: any brokerage, central agency, charter marketing or commercial representation contract comes from PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara, and any fee and payment terms are stated in the offer.

Run the table at the top of this page against anything you receive from us. A vague answer from our side deserves the same treatment as a vague answer from anyone else. What a rate includes and the exclusions list supply the lines for the inclusions test, and how to book gives the order of the steps. Compare it with the operator's own page where one exists, and check that the named boat, the capacity and the inclusions match. Naming a boat in this guide does not mean it can be booked through us, and nothing here reserves a vessel or a date. Nothing is binding before you accept a written offer.

What else do people ask when choosing a provider?

Is there a ranking of luxury phinisi on this site?

No. We publish tests and sourced figures, and leave the ranking to you. A boat that suits one party can be a poor fit for another.

Does a class label like luxury or deluxe tell me what I am getting?

No. One operator guide uses bands by length and cabins, and another site sorts boats on a different scale. Ask for the boat's name and its details instead.

Does a sailing clearance mean the boat was inspected that day?

No. The head of the harbour office told Detik the clearance is an administrative requirement and does not oblige a physical check on board. Ask for the dated safety certificate as well.

Is it always lower to book directly with the operator?

No. In the one pair we show, Sanctuary's operator page has the lower starting figure, but that is a single example of two from rates. Compare complete offers for the same dates.

What if a provider will not show me any papers?

Treat that as information. You can ask again in writing, say which document you need, and compare the reply with what other providers send before you pay a deposit.

Which published prices did we check?

Operator rate pages, agent listings and park fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. A "from" rate is a starting figure, not a quote and not our offer. Tax, season and dates change the total, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
