Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. A published rate is not a quote and not our offer, and nothing here is legal advice.

We have found no regulator that grades luxury phinisi, so class names are the seller's own language. Komodo Resort's charter guide sorts boats into bands by length and cabin count, Komodo Trips uses a different scale, and we have found no shared definition for VIP or VVIP. Compare length, cabins, guests and crew, not the label.

Is there an official luxury phinisi class system?

Not that we have found, whether from a regulator, a harbour authority or a park body, and the word at the root of the market does not help either. UNESCO describes Pinisi as the rig and sail of the Sulawesi schooner, not a class of cruise boat. Everything above that point is a commercial vocabulary, written by whoever is selling the trip.

Two published scales show the problem. Komodo Resort's charter guide says the Labuan Bajo fleet runs to several hundred boats in five broad classes, and it describes the bands in terms of length, cabins and service. Komodo Trips sorts phinisi into Superior, Deluxe and Luxury. Both sites use the word deluxe, yet neither maps its scale onto the other, so a boat called deluxe on one site tells you little about what the same word means on the other.

VIP and VVIP are in a weaker position still, because neither term has a shared definition in anything we have found, and the same goes for superyacht-class and heritage flagship as grades. A seller can use those words honestly and mean something quite specific by them, but the meaning belongs to that seller. Our page on who gets to call a phinisi superyacht-class takes up the top of the range in more detail.

How do the bands compare by length and cabin count?

The clearest published bands come from Komodo Resort's charter guide. We show the three that matter for this comparison, in the guide's own terms. Treat them as one operator's map and not as a scale anyone enforces.

How do the bands compare by length and cabin count?
Band in the guideLengthCabinsWhat the guide adds
Standard wooden phinisiOften 18 to 25 mTwo to fiveShared or private bathrooms
Deluxe phinisiUsually 22 to 30 mFour to eightEn-suite cabins
Luxury phinisi and superyachts30 to 60 m or moreDescribed as large, no count givenA chef, a high crew ratio, water toys and a tender

The bands overlap: a 24 m boat with five cabins fits both of the first two rows, which is why the bathroom arrangement often does more work than the label. The guide also puts luxury phinisi and superyachts in one length band, while its rate ranges in the price table on this page split a luxury row from a flagship row.

Named boats show how wide a single band can be. These figures come from one agent's listing, Navelia's fleet page, so they are comparable with each other but they are not official documents.

How do the bands compare by length and cabin count?
BoatLengthCabinsGuestsCrew
Lamima65.2 m71420
Vela50 m61218
Sanctuary48 m91814
Alila Purnama46 m51016
Aliikai40 m71414

All five reach the guide's top band by length, and they are very different products. Sanctuary is two metres longer than Alila Purnama, takes eight more guests and lists two fewer crew. Sanya, in the same agent's rate row, is listed at 36 m with two cabins, while Aliikai at 40 m has seven. Length alone predicts neither how many people share the boat nor how many people look after them. We set out what these crew counts can and cannot prove on our page about published crew-to-guest numbers.

What separates a deluxe boat from a luxury boat?

On the Komodo Resort scale the step comes at about 30 metres, and it changes what the guide promises around the cabin. Deluxe is described by private bathrooms and a cabin count. Luxury is described by service: a chef, more crew per guest, water toys and a tender. If you are comparing a 28 m boat with a 34 m boat, those are the points to put to each seller, because they can be answered with a yes, a no or a number.

Price is harder to compare across that step than it looks, because the published units differ. In the price table on this page, the guide's deluxe row and the Asik Travel row are whole-boat totals for three days and two nights, while the luxury, flagship and named-boat rows are per night. One oddity stays open: the Asik Travel row is a standard-tier boat, yet its figure sits inside the guide's deluxe range. We print both as published, so check each at its source. Put every candidate on one basis before you compare them: the total for your dates and your group, with tax stated. Tax is itself uneven. Lamima publishes its rate plus 11% VAT, Vela publishes its rate as subject to 12% VAT, and Navelia's fleet page lists both boats at those same base figures without stating the tax. There is no single VAT line to assume for the market.

A practical test for the deluxe and luxury question has five parts. Is every cabin en-suite? Who plans and cooks the meals? How many crew are aboard for your group size? Is there a tender, and is it available all day? Which water toys are in the rate, and which are charged? Write the five answers into the offer, whatever word the seller uses.

What do you pay for at the top end?

Komodo Resort names four things: space, crew ratio, build quality and range. That is an operator describing its own market, but it is a useful frame because each item can be tested separately.

  • Space. Read cabins and guests against length. A long boat with many cabins may give each guest less room than a shorter boat with few.
  • Crew ratio. Ask for the crew number on your dates, and judge the boat you are offered on its own figures.
  • Build quality. This is the hardest to judge from a brochure. Ask which papers exist and what each one proves, using our list of documents to ask for before you pay.
  • Range. Navelia describes most yachts as switching region through the year, so range affects which months a boat is in Komodo at all. Our page on when to charter compares the published calendars.

The class word is not on that list of four.

How do you check a class label for yourself?

This takes a written answer from the seller and two published pages to set against it.

  1. Ask the seller to define the label in one sentence for this boat. If the answer is only more adjectives, set the label aside.
  2. Take length, cabins, guests and crew from the operator's own page where one exists, and compare them with an agent listing.
  3. When two figures disagree, ask which one applies and on what document.
  4. Do not treat a website capacity figure as legal capacity, and ask for the document that states the certified number.
  5. Check the same boat with a second seller, because one boat can have more than one seller and the descriptions can drift along with the prices.
  6. Ask what the rate covers, using what a rate includes and the list of exclusions, with tax, before you compare it with any figure in the published price guide.

Apply the same test to us. A request through this desk can end in a contract with a company in our group, so if we use a class word in an offer, ask us to define it as well. Our guide to choosing a provider applies the same habit to the seller rather than the boat, and how to book shows where the answers belong in a written quote. For what these boats publish on rates, inclusions and safety papers, go back to the Luxury Phinisi Labuan Bajo overview.

Which published prices did we check?

Operator rate pages, agent listings and park fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. A "from" rate is a starting figure, not a quote and not our offer. Tax, season and dates change the total, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

What do buyers ask about phinisi classes?

Is VIP a higher class than deluxe on a phinisi?

Not on any shared scale we have found. The order depends on the seller using the word. Ask that seller for the cabin count, bathroom arrangement, crew count and price basis behind the label, then compare those.

Does a longer phinisi always carry more crew?

No. On Navelia's fleet page, Sanctuary at 48 m lists 14 crew and Alila Purnama at 46 m lists 16 crew, even though Sanctuary takes more guests.

Are Superior and Standard the same class?

Not on any published map. Komodo Trips uses Superior, Deluxe and Luxury, while Komodo Resort's guide describes a standard band, and neither source maps one scale onto the other.

Does a class label tell me what the rate includes?

No. Inclusions are published boat by boat, so a shared label says nothing about them. Read the rate page for the boat you are considering and ask the seller to confirm any line that is missing.

Which class suits a group of 14?

Group size narrows the field more than the class word does. Lamima and Aliikai both list 14 guests on Navelia's fleet page, at very different lengths, so start from boats that list your number and then confirm it in writing.

Which sources support this page?

How do I reach the desk?

If a seller has given you a class word you cannot pin down, send it with the boat's name and your dates by WhatsApp on +62 811-3941-4563 or by email to bd@juaraholding.com. The desk replies with what the published sources support, and the seller still has to define the word.
