Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. A published rate is not a quote and not our offer, and nothing here is legal advice.

Navelia names May to October for Komodo and Barefoot Yachts names April to October, so start there. The season also decides which flagships you can charter, because Navelia says most yachts move to Raja Ampat for the other months. Fix the boat's calendar first, then your dates, and leave a margin for sailing stops.

Which months do sources name for Komodo?

Five published sources give five different answers. Two are agents stating a good period, and three are the calendars of individual boats, which is a different kind of evidence. A boat calendar tells you where that boat is scheduled to be. It does not rank the weather.

Komodo Resort's seasonal guide calls April to October the dry season and November to March the wet season, and says air temperatures stay between 25 and 32 degrees Celsius all year, so heat is not the deciding factor. Sea state and boat availability do more to shape a charter than the thermometer.

The narrowest claim in the set concerns two months. Komodo Resort's charter guide says July and August have the flattest seas and are also the busiest and most expensive weeks, and that good boats book three to six months ahead. That is one operator's statement, but it does describe the trade-off most clearly. Our page on how early to book for July and August works through that window on its own.

Are July and August the calmest weeks?

Sources disagree, so do not plan on flat water. Komodo Resort's charter guide says July and August have the flattest seas. Neptune Liveaboards describes those months differently: southeast trade winds make the south Komodo sites lively and put whitecaps in the straits by mid-afternoon, though mornings usually stay workable, and it prefers April to June and September to October for Komodo round trips. Hello Flores gives a third frame, calling May to August the calmest and September to October a shoulder season with fewer crowds. All three sell trips, and none of the three pages cites wave records. For a measure with no seller behind it, use BMKG's wave categories, and ask your captain how the route treats south Komodo in the afternoon.

Where do the big boats go outside those months?

This is where a luxury charter differs from a standard Komodo trip. Navelia says most yachts move between Komodo and Raja Ampat with the season, so for a large boat the question is often whether it will be in Labuan Bajo at all. Setting the three published calendars side by side makes this plain.

All three boats are in Komodo only in June, July and August. In the shoulder months the choice thins out quickly: April and October each show one of the three, and from November to March none. These are three boats among many, and each calendar can change, so read this as the pattern to check and not as a schedule. It does explain why a date chosen first and a boat chosen second can leave you with few of the names you started from.

Asking a boat to come to you outside its calendar is a separate conversation with a separate cost. The Phinisi 50 listing names repositioning fees among its exclusions. If you want a charter from Labuan Bajo between December and March, our page on sailing Komodo in those months covers what remains and what to ask.

Does the dry season rule out closures?

No. August 2026 is the example; January 2026 shows a stop in the wet months. Komodo Resort says the park has no published closed season, and that the January 2026 stop came from suspended sailing approvals and held for roughly a month. CNN Indonesia reported notice 05/MP-I/2026 from KSOP, the Labuan Bajo harbour authority, which closed clearance for all tourist boats from 12 to 15 January 2026 or until BMKG, the national weather agency, reported better conditions. The notice's dates are shorter than the guide's roughly a month, and later extensions are reported elsewhere, so the two accounts cover different stretches of the same event.

The August stop sits inside every source's good months. Kompas reports that sailing to Komodo and Padar was restricted from 6 August 2026 and reopened on 10 August, with waves of 1.30 to 1.50 metres according to BMKG. On BMKG's own scale, moderate waves run from 1.25 to 2.5 metres, high from 2.5 to 4, very high from 4 to 6, and extreme above 6. So the reopening figure was already in the moderate band, which is a useful reminder that a reopened sea is not necessarily a flat one.

BMKG also publishes a marine forecast for Labuan Bajo waters with a three-day validity window. That makes it a tool for the final days, not for choosing a month. For the choice itself, the sensible response to these two stops is structural: keep some margin between the last sailing day and any long-haul flight, and read what your terms say when clearance is withheld. Our page on what happens when the weather turns goes through that clause by clause.

How busy is the park in peak months?

Busy enough that the harbour numbers are worth reading. Kompas, citing the harbour authority, reports 20,562 sailing clearances to tourist boats in January to June 2026, an average of 113 departures a day. That half-year includes months one operator guide calls wet season, and it counts all tourist boats, so it is a measure of the harbour and not of the luxury segment.

The August report gives a sharper picture of one day. Kompas says that on 10 August 2026 the authority issued 324 clearances by midday, with 3,771 tourists departing, and that Mondays and Fridays are usually the peak. That was also the day the restriction lifted, so some of the crowd may be a backlog; the report does not separate it, and we would not treat it as a normal August morning. The weekday note is the more usable detail. If your dates can move, ask whether a mid-week departure is possible on the boat you want.

The park sets limits of its own alongside the harbour. Registration and the daily visitor quota are covered on our page about Komodo park rules, and a private boat does not appear to change them.

Is there a published seasonal price difference?

Not one that holds across the market. We found no source for a market-wide percentage between high and low season, and Komodo Resort's description of July and August as the most expensive weeks comes without a number. The firmest published item we found is a single boat's supplement: Vela lists a nightly high-season supplement for 20 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 on its Raja Ampat rate, with the amount on its own rate page.

Read the Vela rows in the price table on this page with care. They show Vela's Komodo rate for May to September in 2026 and in 2027, so the gap between them is a change from one year to the next on one boat. It is not a difference between seasons, and there is no low-season Komodo rate to set beside it, because the calendar places the boat in Raja Ampat for most of the remaining months. That is a pattern worth knowing about flagships in general: the off-season alternative may be a different region at a different rate, not the same trip at a lower figure.

So when a seller quotes a seasonal price, ask which rate sheet it comes from, which dates it covers, and whether tax is inside it. Then compare the totals for your actual dates. The Luxury Phinisi Labuan Bajo home page prints Lamima and Vela rows for 2027 dates as a starting point.

How do you turn this into a booking date?

Work in this order, since each step narrows the next one.

  1. Name two or three boats you would accept, and read each boat's current calendar on its own site.
  2. Find the months when they are actually in Komodo, and note where the calendars overlap.
  3. Decide what matters more to you: the busy July and August weeks, or a thinner choice of boats in a shoulder month.
  4. Ask each seller how far ahead that boat is usually committed, instead of assuming a general figure applies to it.
  5. If you can, avoid a Monday or Friday departure, and ask whether the boat can start on another day.
  6. Book your flight home with spare time after the last sailing day, then check the BMKG forecast in the final days.

Which published prices did we check?

Operator rate pages, agent listings and park fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. A "from" rate is a starting figure, not a quote and not our offer. Tax, season and dates change the total, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

What do readers ask about charter timing?

What is the best month for a luxury phinisi charter in Komodo?

No single month is agreed. June, July and August are the only months when the calendars of Vela, Prana by Atzaro and the Phinisi 50 listing all place the boat in Komodo. Komodo Resort's guide says July and August have the flattest seas and are the busiest and most expensive weeks.

Is Komodo National Park closed from January to March?

No closed season is published, according to Komodo Resort. Sailing can still stop, as it did in January 2026 when the harbour authority closed clearance for tourist boats, reported by CNN Indonesia.

Can I charter a flagship phinisi from Labuan Bajo in December?

Not on the three published calendars we compared. Vela and Prana by Atzaro both place December in Raja Ampat, and the Phinisi 50 listing places it in Raja Ampat, the Banda Sea or Maluku. Other boats may differ, so ask about the specific boat.

How far ahead should I book for July or August?

Komodo Resort's guide says good boats book three to six months ahead. That is one operator's figure, so ask about the calendar of the boat you actually want as early as you can.

Are charters priced lower in the wet season?

Not that any source shows. Flagships that leave Komodo for those months are priced for another region, as Vela's rate page shows.
