Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. A published rate is not a quote and not our offer, and nothing here is legal advice.

No class suits every family or every couple; cabin count and group size usually decide. One agent listing shows Sanya with two cabins and boats such as Aliikai with seven. One Komodo operator guide says charters are priced per boat, so a couple pays for unused space on a large boat, while a family needs enough cabins and a crew used to children.

We do not rank boats here. The comparison below uses one agent's published figures so the numbers at least share a source, and it adds what named operators and agents say about children.

How do cabin counts change the choice?

They set both who fits and what each person effectively pays. A Komodo operator guide from Komodo Resort prices charters by the boat, and notes that rate cards often climb in group bands. In its view, the size of the party, more than the class of the boat, settles whether a trip is good value per head. That is the source's opinion, but the logic is easy to test against any quote.

Here is a spread of boats from the Navelia yacht list, an agent's page. Length and cabins do not move together, which is the point of laying them out.

How do cabin counts change the choice?
Boat (Navelia listing)LengthCabinsGuests listedCrew listed
Sanya36 m2AskAsk
Aliikai40 m71414
Alila Purnama46 m51016
Sanctuary48 m91814
Vela50 m61218
Lamima65.2 m71420

Two boats of similar length can feel quite different. Alila Purnama at 46 m lists five cabins and Sanctuary at 48 m lists nine, so one gives each guest more of the boat, and the other spreads the cost across more guests. Sanctuary's own operator page, OXO Living, matches the agent on length, cabins and guests.

A caution on those guest numbers: figures on an agent or operator page are not a certified capacity. Ask the seller to confirm the limit on the boat's papers, especially if your party would sit close to it. The page on vessel classes explains why labels such as "deluxe" tell you less than this table does.

The price table on this page gives the agent's "from" rates for Sanya, Andamari, Ikan Kayu and Aliikai. These are per night for the whole boat, so they should be read against your own headcount. Tax also needs a question: Lamima and Vela each publish a VAT line on their own pages, whereas the agent's fleet page does not state the tax for those two boats. Ask what a "from" rate on that list includes.

What do sources say about children on board?

Not much, and what exists comes mainly from people selling charters, so read it with that in mind. Three statements are worth having:

  • Komodo Resort's guide says families with young children usually get the most from a charter, and advises looking for deck railings, shade and a crew used to children.
  • Barefoot Yachts says Komodo works well for families because anchorages vary and cruising distances are short. That is an agent's view of the destination, and it does not address any specific boat.
  • Vela states there is no minimum age for children on board, and that it cannot take more than 12 adults including maids and personnel.

The Vela line contains a detail that families with staff tend to miss: a nanny or maid counts toward its adult limit. A party that fits the boat on paper may stop fitting once the help is included. We have found no equivalent published age policy for the other boats in the table above, so you need to ask each one directly.

Food is the other point that parents should raise early. The Komodo Resort guide wants dietary needs raised when you book. A child's allergy is exactly the kind of detail that has to reach the cook before the boat is provisioned.

Young children also change what counts as a good day. Long stretches between anchorages matter less to an adult reading on deck than to a five-year-old, and a shore walk that suits a teenager may not suit a toddler. Treat the Barefoot comment on short distances as a starting point and ask the captain for a day-by-day plan, with the time between stops written down.

What suits a couple?

We have not found a source that rates boats specifically for couples, so what follows is reasoning from the pricing and not a ranking. The main question is how much empty boat you are willing to pay for. On a per-boat rate, two people on a seven-cabin vessel carry the cost of five cabins nobody is sleeping in. For some couples that is exactly what they want: the whole deck, the whole crew, nobody else at dinner. For others it is a poor use of money.

A two-cabin boat changes that sum. Sanya on the Navelia list is the two-cabin example in the price table. Having one spare cabin also gives a couple room to bring a friend or a parent, or to use it as a dressing room, though you should check how the seller's rate treats extra guests.

Paying by the person or the cabin is the other route, with its own trade-offs. This table sets out where each kind of group might start:

What suits a couple?
GroupWhat to look at firstWhat a source says
Couple wanting a whole boatSmaller cabin counts; rate per boatCharter prices are per boat (Komodo Resort guide)
Couple wanting to pay by the personBoats that sell cabins or shared tripsAsik Travel prices shared phinisi trips per person, on a standard-tier boat. Vela says it sells no trips by the cabin
Family with young childrenRailings, shade, crew experience, cabin layoutKomodo Resort guide, as above
Family with a nanny or maidAdult limit, including staffVela FAQ, as above
Several households togetherEnough cabins, and a split of cost per personGroup size usually decides value (Komodo Resort guide)

When comparing, keep the basis straight. Komodo Trips uses per-person figures for packages and per-boat figures for charters, and Asik Travel tells readers to take care when setting a whole-boat price against a cabin rate, and to get a quote for the real group. A per-person figure and a whole-boat figure look very different until you divide by your own headcount. Note too that a shared trip can be a different product on a different class of boat, as the Asik example shows, so the choice is about more than price.

What should parents ask?

A seller who has hosted children before will answer most of these without hesitation. Put them in one message and keep the replies:

  1. Is there a minimum age on this boat, and is that written anywhere?
  2. How high are the deck railings, and are there open sections, steep stairs or an unguarded swim platform?
  3. Where is the shade during the day, and is there an indoor space with air conditioning for a child's nap?
  4. Which cabins connect or sit close to each other, and can a child's bed be added? Ask for a plan of the layout.
  5. Do you carry life jackets in sizes that fit my children, and how many? A Komodo guide advises passengers to count life jackets, and KSOP's October 2024 guidance requires life jackets and liferafts adequate for capacity.
  6. Has this crew worked with children of this age, and who watches the water during a swim stop?
  7. What is the nearest medical help on this route, and how would you reach it at night, given the reported ban on boat movement at night in park waters?
  8. How does the galley handle my child's allergies or diet, and what do you need from me, by when?
  9. How long are the longest passages between anchorages on your proposed plan?

The safety equipment guide covers the boat's side of question five. For the seller's side, use the provider checklist, and if a family booking is large, compare what each rate actually includes before you compare totals. Our Luxury Phinisi Labuan Bajo page also explains how a shared cabin differs from a whole-boat charter.

Which published prices did we check?

Operator rate pages, agent listings and park fees, each with its source and the month we checked it. A "from" rate is a starting figure, not a quote and not our offer. Tax, season and dates change the total, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

What questions do parents and couples raise?

Are there family cabins on luxury phinisi boats?

Not as a standard in the sources here. Cabin counts on one agent list run from two on Sanya to nine on Sanctuary, but a count says nothing about connecting doors or extra beds, so ask for a cabin plan.

What does a charter cost for a couple?

Often the same as for a small group, because one Komodo guide says charter prices are per boat, though many rate cards step up by group band. The from rates in the price table on this page are per night for the whole boat.

Is there a minimum age for children?

Not on Vela, which states there is no minimum age on board. Check with each seller of the other boats listed here before you plan around one.

Is a larger boat better for a family?

Not automatically. A long boat with few cabins may not fit your party, and one agent list shows a 46 m boat with five cabins beside a 40 m boat with seven. Cabin layout and crew experience matter more than length.

Does a nanny count toward a boat's guest limit?

Yes, on Vela. It says it cannot take more than 12 adults including maids and personnel. Other boats may treat staff differently, so count everyone travelling and ask the seller to confirm the total.
