Yes, on at least one: Manta Point appears on a three-day sample route from Labuan Bajo in the komodoresort.com charter guide, but no source can promise you a stop or a sighting. Vela says itineraries can change at short notice for weather, tides or currents. Ask for the stop to be named on your written itinerary, and treat mantas as wild animals.

Is Manta Point on sourced routes?

Yes, as a named stop on a sample route, and with one naming question you should clear up. Two sources point to a place for mantas, and they use different words:

Is Manta Point on sourced routes?
SourceHow the stop is namedOther stops named with it
Charter guide on komodoresort.com (operator)Manta Point, listed alongside a separate Taka MakassarKanawa or Kelor, Padar at sunrise, Pink Beach, a ranger walk on Komodo, Kalong at dusk
Barefoot Yachts (agent)Karang Makassar, given as the place for mantasLoh Buaya on Rinca, Loh Liang on Komodo, Padar ridge, Siaba for turtles, Kalong for flying foxes

We have not found a source that maps these names against each other. The komodoresort.com guide treats Manta Point and Taka Makassar as two stops, and Barefoot Yachts ties mantas to Karang Makassar. So when you read a route, ask which site the provider means by its name, and do not assume that one label translates to another.

Both lists are samples and neither binds a boat. The guide's list describes what a three-day trip can combine, which is different from what any boat will do on your dates. Islands on a phinisi trip covers the wider route choices.

The closest published reference for sailing time is general: the komodoresort.com guide gives one and a half to two and a half hours each way to the central park sites. Ask the provider for the time on your own route, and how the stop fits with the others planned that day.

What can change the timing of this stop?

Several things, and only one source speaks to itineraries directly. Vela lists tides and currents, along with weather, as reasons its itineraries may change at short notice. Other warnings about the water are broader than this one stop: the komodoresort.com guide says Komodo's best-known dive sites run strong, unpredictable currents and need a guide who knows them on each tide, and Wikipedia warns of currents on Komodo's east coast towards Labuan Bajo, calling them extremely dangerous with inexperienced guides. Neither of those names Manta Point.

We have not found a source specific to this site, so treat any exact hour on a marketing page as an aspiration. A captain can reasonably say "morning, if conditions allow", and a contract cannot responsibly say more.

Other limits also shape the day. Antara's report of the KSOP ban on night movement in park waters applies across the route, and the komodoresort.com guide says a boat must anchor near Padar before sunset the evening before a sunrise walk. So this stop has to fit into daylight alongside everything else on the list. Access can also close altogether. A route through those waters would have had to change during the Komodo and Padar restriction that Kompas reports for 6 to 10 August 2026. The money side of that is on what happens when the weather turns.

Can you be sure of seeing mantas?

No. Mantas are wild animals, and nobody can promise them. We publish no sighting rate, because we have no data that would support one. If a seller quotes you a percentage or an outright promise, ask what it rests on.

What you can fairly ask about is effort and flexibility:

  • If the first visit shows no mantas, can the boat try again that day or the next?
  • Does the route leave room for a second attempt, or is each day already full?
  • Will the guide make the call on the water, or is the plan fixed in advance?
  • If the stop is dropped for current or weather, what replaces it?

Length affects those answers. A three-day route carrying many stops has little room for a return visit, so a longer charter gives you more chances. Boats set their own minimums, and minimum nights in Komodo compares them. Do not expect money back because the animals did not appear, and do not plan a whole trip around one species.

What snorkelling and diving kit should you confirm?

Confirm it for the people in your group, because snorkellers and divers have different needs at the same stop. The komodoresort.com guide says a typical Labuan Bajo rate covers snorkelling equipment and life jackets. The Boatbookings listing for Phinisi 50 and Sanctuary's operator both name snorkelling equipment too. Ask whether there are enough masks and fins in the right sizes for children if you are travelling with them.

Diving takes more checking. The same guide warns that many charter boats cannot support diving, lacking a compressor, tanks or a qualified dive leader. Kompas reports that park rules give activities such as diving their own tickets, so if the site lies inside the park, a dive carries its own ticket; ask the provider. Cost detail is on diving costs on a charter. Given the current warnings above, ask who the dive guide is and how well that person knows this site on the tide you will meet.

Whether snorkelling or diving works better at this particular stop is a question for the captain on the day.

How do you get this stop onto your itinerary?

Put it in writing, in words that leave the provider room to be honest. A request like this is simple to send and hard to misread:

  • Name the stop, and ask the provider which site it means by that name.
  • Ask for it on the written itinerary as a planned stop, subject to the captain's decision.
  • Say whether your group wants to snorkel, dive or do both.
  • Ask whether a second attempt is possible on your route length.
  • Ask what replaces the stop if it cannot run.

A provider who answers "planned, conditions permitting" is telling you the truth. A provider who writes "you will swim with mantas" is promising something no boat controls. Prefer the first answer.

What else do people ask about this stop?

Is Manta Point on every phinisi itinerary?

No. It appears on one operator guide's sample route. Barefoot Yachts names Karang Makassar for mantas, and we have not found a source mapping the two. Only your own written itinerary shows what your boat plans.

Can I snorkel at Manta Point from a phinisi?

Often, but conditions on the day decide. Snorkelling kit is typical on Labuan Bajo rates per one operator guide, so ask the captain.

Are manta sightings promised on any trip?

No. Mantas are wild animals, so nobody can commit to a sighting. Ask what the boat will do if none appear, and do not pay extra for a promise.

What time of day is the Manta Point stop?

That varies. Vela says weather, tides or currents can change its itineraries at short notice, and the day's route also plays a part.

Do I need to be a certified diver for this stop?

Only if you plan to dive. Vela's rate covers diving for certified divers and leaves PADI courses outside it, and other boats set their own rules or may carry no dive kit at all.

Which sources support this page?

Every link here was checked in November 2026. Route lists are samples published by an operator and an agent, and neither is a schedule.
